The LIFE Project’s Law Student Volunteer Program: The Implementation of Village Conservation Forest Management Agreement in Nayantai village, Nambak district, Lungprabang province, Laos
This case study captures the good practice of how Law student volunteers successfully supported villagers in Nayantai village to create Village Conservation Forest Management Agreement
Before the creation of the Village Conservation Forest Management Agreement, law student volunteers led two important activities in Nayantai village: 1) Participatory Data Collection by using The River Of…activity; and 2) Legal Raising Awareness on land and natural resources in the village. Those activities are essential to enable community members to know what their rights over land and natural resources are and how to enforce them. Those activities also helped volunteer group to gather the community view for changes over years related to natural resources. Because of all activities designed and implemented in the participatory approach, it helps to facilitate the discussion among villagers from understanding legal aspects to actual solution which all community members agreed on which was to identify Village Conservation Forest Area.
From three main activities implemented in the village, law students’ volunteer gained their practical experiences, which are necessaries for their study and career path; while villagers understand their legal rights and obligations over natural resource management. The activity was also well-received support from district and local authorities.
