The Land Learning Initiative for Food Security Enhancement (LIFE project)
A capacity building and legal awareness raising project related to land and natural resources in Lao PDR.
What is LIFE project?
LIFE project is a key project on legal awareness raising in Lao PDR and was founded in 2014 by a broad coalition of civil society organisations that were all members of the Land Information working group (LIWG).
LIFE works with many partners such as CARE, CCL, CORD, FAO, GAPE, GIZ, Helvetas, JVC, MCC, Oxfam, VFI, RRDPA and World Renew. The Department of Agricultural Land Management (DALaM) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is the project’s main government counterpart. LIFE aims to ‘mainstream’ land issues into recipient organizations’ regular activities, and strengthen small holders’ and family farmers’ land tenure security in the long term. This is done through capacity-building activities on key policies and legislations related to land and natural resources to CSOs, development partners, government and private sector stakeholders.
LIFE excels at making complex theoretical concepts, such as articles and provisions of Lao land laws and regulations, understandable to laypersons from various backgrounds
LIFE’s training materials and coaching sessions are tailored to match the differing contexts and needs of each recipient
LIFE successfully mainstreams land issues into recipient organisations’ regular activities regardless of their primary focus. It also strengthens the land tenure security of smallholder farmers over the long term
LIFE’s training is designed to enable and encourage recipients to replicate the training in their communities, creating a multiplier ripple effect
LIFE has over time developed a team of trainers exceptionally skilled at fostering real dialogue between diverse stakeholders about land issues
LIFE project: An innovative approach to legal awareness raising on land and natural resources in Lao PDR
This is a video to reflect on good practice of project implemented together with with many stakeholders and LIWG members, government, and international organizations.
“One of LIFE’s biggest successes is its ability to make complex theoretical concepts such as articles and provisions of Lao laws and regulations understandable to laypersons.”
